Maple Package: vec_calc

Art Belmonte and Philip B. Yasskin wrote the code for the vec_calc package. David Arnold and James Warren encapsulated it into a Maple package and wrote the Help files.

On Texas A & M Math Department UNIX computers:

• To load the vec_calc package, issue the command
  > with(vec_calc);
  at the beginning of your Maple session.
• To have the vec_calc package automatically loaded each time you open or restart Maple, place the command with(vec_calc); in the file .mapleinit in your home directory. You only need to do this once. Ask your TA or instructor if you need help.

On DOS/Windows computers:

• You will need to obtain copies of the two vec_calc library files:
  maple.ind
  
  maple.lib
  This can most easily be done (in Netscape or Mosaic) by
  1. Click on the file name above. ( Very little will appear when you do this but that is OK. )
  2. Select the File menu.
  3. Choose Save As.
  4. In the Selection box you will see the default location to save the files. You can keep the default directory (recommended) or change the directory to the one you want (eg. floppy drive A:).

  Alernatively, if you have a Math or Calclab computer account, these files are available on the Texas A & M Math Department UNIX computers in the following directories:

  • On the calclab and science machines in the directory: /home4/fac/MapleVR3
  • On the fourier and laplace machines in the directory: /u2/calclab/local
  FTP these files to a floppy disk using BINARY mode. FTP is explained in the document ``Using FTP at the ACC'' available at the ACC.
• To load the vec_calc package, put the floppy in drive A: and issue the commands
  > libname:=libname,`A:`;
  > with(vec_calc);
  at the beginning of your Maple session.
• If you use drive B: change the A: to B: in the libname command. If you install the files on your hard disk change the A: to the correct path using \\ for each directory \. For example, if the files are in the (recommended) directory C:\maplev3\local, then the libname command should read
  > libname:=libname,`C:\\maplev3\\local`;
• If you prefer to have the libname command executed automatically when you start Maple, then do one of the following:
  1. Start Maple using a batch file containing the command
     C:\maplev3\bin\wmaple53.exe -b C:\maplev3\lib -b C:\maplev3\local
  2. In the Program Manager, select the Maple icon, click on FILE,PROPERTIES and modify the Command Line to say
     C:\maplev3\bin\wmaple53.exe -b C:\maplev3\lib -b C:\maplev3\local
  These assume that Maple is installed in the directory C:\maplev3 and the vec_calc library files are installed in the directory C:\maplev3\local. Maple updates can also require a modification to the libname line.
