This course is required of all majors in the College of Business. It also satisfies part of the mathematics/philosophy requirement in the core curriculum. Some students will have passed MATH 150, MATH 131, or MATH 142, and some will be taking MATH 141 as a first college mathematics course. This heterogeneous group will have widely varying algebraic skills.
TO THE INSTRUCTOR: We have carefully coordinated this course with the College of Business. They ask that we spend at least two weeks on the simplex method of linear programming. In addition, they ask that about one-half of the course be devoted to probability and statistics. MATH 141 is the preparation their students have for BANA 303 (a course taught in the Statistics Department which has MATH 141 as a prerequisite) and for BANA 364 (a course which uses the simplex method as a tool). Every business major is required to take both BANA 303 and BANA 364.
