Engineering freshmen are advised either to take calculus (MATH 151) or precalculus (MATH 150) based on their SAT scores, high school grades, and local placement tests. The split is generally 2/3 for calculus to 1/3 for precalculus. Students who are not ready for precalculus generally enroll in MATH 102 or MATH 103. One of the main problem areas for these students is poor algebra and trigonometry skills. These topics should be given high priority in this course. The course covers a lot of ground, so the students need to be exhorted to study from the beginning, attend the free Help Sessions offered by the Math Department, and ask for help at the earliest sign of difficulty. Giving a major exam early (in the fourth week) will help you spot the really weak students. These can be counselled to see their academic dean.
A passing grade in this course is supposed to mean that the student is prepared to take MATH 151 (Calculus). Accurate evaluation is imperative.
