Note: This is a fall or spring schedule. In summer, this schedule is accelerated by 50% in order to accommodate a 10-week session.
Week 1 Introduction, trigonometry review, two-dimensional vectors. Appendix D, Section 1.1.
Week 2 Dot product, parameterized curves,
(qualitative) definition of limit. Sections 1,2, 1.3, 2.2.
Important: Discuss the polar coordinate representation of
vectors and how to rotate a vector about the origin by a given angle
(see the extra exercise on the list of homework problems for section
1.2)
Examples from Section 2.1 on tangent and velocity can be
incorporated into Section 2.2 to motivate limits. The concepts of
tangents and velocity will be revisited in later sections.
Week 3 Calculation of limits, limits at infinity, continuity. Sections 2.3, 2.5, 2.6. Note that the epsilon-delta definition (section 2.4) is skipped.
Week 4 Velocity, differentiation. Sections 2.7, 3.1, 3.2. Note. Physics has requested that we cover antidifferentiation formulas along with differentiation formulas.
Week 5 Rates of Change, Derivatives of the trigonometric functions, and EXAM I (Thursday, covering thru 3.2). Sections 3.3, 3.4.
Week 6 Chain rule, implicit differentiation, derivatives of vector-valued functions. Sections 3.5, 3.6, 3.7.
Week 7 Higher derivatives, tangents of parameterized curves, Related rates. Sections 3.8, 3.9, 3.10.
Week 8 Differentials and approximation, exponential and inverse functions. Sections 3.11, 4.1, 4.2. Pay particular attention in section 3.11 to standard approximations, such as sin(x) ~ x and sqrt(1+x) ~ 1+x/2. (3.12 on Newton's Method will be done in lab.)
Week 9 Logarithmic functions, derivatives of logarithms, and EXAM II (Thursday, covering 3.3 - 4.2). Sections 4.3, 4.4 .
Week 10 Exponential growth and decay, inverse trigonometric functions, L'Hospital's Rule. Sections 4.5, 4.6, 4.8.
Week 11 Graphical interpretation of the derivative, first and second derivative tests. Sections 5.1, 5.2, 5.3 (5.4 on curve sketching with technology will be done in lab).
Week 12 Applied max/min, antiderivatives, Riemann sums. Sections 5.5, 5.7, 6.1
Week 13 Area and the definite integral. Sections 6.2, 6.3 Thanksgiving falls this week.
Week 14 The Fundamental Theorem of Calculus and EXAM III (Tuesday, covering 4.3 - 6.3) Section 6.4
Week 15 Review for FINAL. Last day of class is Tuesday. Note that the last week of class has redefined day(s). See Important Dates for details.
