Viewing QuickTime/EnSharpen Videos
I have made several series of QuickTime streaming videos to illustrate
the use of the TAMUCALC package in Calculus 1, 2, and 3. These videos
employ the TechSmith Ensharpen video codec, which produces
exceptionally sharp images. Software needed to view such videos is
freely available.
- TAMU students (i.e., those enrolled at Texas A&M
University in College Station) may simply go to an open access lab on
campus and view such videos on Windows computers there. (They may also
view them on CalcLab Linux workstations in Blocker using the Kaffeine
Player. Watch the Flash video
QuickTime in the Kaffeine Player!)
In either case, be sure to bring headphones or earphones to
listen to the soundtrack. Here is an
illustrative Flash video as to what to expect the first
time in Internet Explorer!
- If you have a Windows XP or Windows Vista computer
at home, proceed as follows.
- Download and install the
TechSmith
Ensharpen video codec, then reboot your machine.
- Next, download and install these two programs:
Safari+QuickTime for Windows XP or Vista. (Be sure to check the
correct radio button to get both Safari and QuickTime.)
- While you can get QuickTime videos to play within
Internet Explorer, you will probably find it much easier to
play them in the Safari web browser. Either way will work,
however. Firefox works as well. Here is an
illustrative Flash video as to what to expect the first
time if you use Internet Explorer! (Safari does not have this
[recurring] problem.)
- If you have a Macintosh computer at home, download and
install the
TechSmith
Ensharpen video codec, then reboot your machine. You may then play
the videos in the Safari or Firefox web browsers.
- If you have a Linux computer at home, it can be
configured to view QuickTime videos. (For example, TAMU Math Dept
sysadmins have configured CalcLab Linux workstations in Blocker to
play QuickTime videos.) That said, you're on your own at home!
