COMPUTER ODDS & ENDS [revised from notes for the first help session, 96/9/5] LOGGING IN If you don't yet have your password, please see me. Host name: Use "calclab" followed by a small integer (1-4) for telnet, but "calclab" by itself for e-mail. If you're in the calclab rooms, after logging in you will usually want to close Maple and bring up either a terminal window (for the report program) or Mosaic (for browsing the Web). Ask the Blocker help personnel for assistance if necessary. LOOKING AT THE WEB - by hot links from other pages - by URL (http://calclab.math.tamu.edu/~fulling/m311/) Mosaic complains if the final slash is not there (for a directory). Netscape has been removed from calclab because it crashed the X-terminals frequently. Use the browser Mosaic instead (when you are in the math calclab rooms). Look at .html, .txt, .dvi, and .ps files on course home page. To see the whole width of a .txt (plain ASCII text) file, you may need to maximize your Mosaic or Netscape window. Look at last year's course page for examples of good reports. (These won't display quite right in Mosaic until I change the file names from .asc to .txt.) (DONE) PUTTING FILES IN YOUR OWN public_html You need not use calclab for this purpose, if you have a Web page elsewhere. Account will terminate at end of semester. It is subject to University rules. Make sure file permissions are correct: chmod 755 public_html chmod 644 public_html/.txt READING E-MAIL Must use calclab address, but a .forward file is permissible. WHEN DO YOU NEED CALCLAB, AND HOW CAN YOU GET INTO IT? Usually don't need to be in the Blocker rooms. Report generator, e-mail accessible by telnet (modem, PC lab, etc.) PCs next door have Maple, telnet, ftp (from floppy). PCs have MicroXWin to get to calclab to do Maple, Mosaic with .ps and .dvi viewers. Ask CIS help personnel for assistance if necessary. tam2000 has Netscape with .ps and .dvi viewers.
