THE CLASS FORMERLY KNOWN AS
Mathematics 401, Fall, 1998
SKIP PAST THE ANNOUNCEMENTS if you so desire.
Course procedures and announcements:
- Dec. 4: The final review session will be WEDNESDAY 12/9 at 7:30
p.m. in Blocker 624. Also, I expect to be in my office on Thursday 12/10
from 11:30 to 1:00. I expect to be able to return all your remaining
homework papers at either of those times.
- Dec. 1: All three test keys are now for sale at Notes-n-Quotes.
- Nov. 30: YOUR ACCOUNT WILL BECOME A PUMPKIN!
Student CalcLab accounts will be destroyed on Friday, 18 December.
Open hours end Monday, 7 December, at midnight (after which CIS labs will
still be available).
- Nov. 4: URGENT!! ARE YOU HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE REPORT
PROGRAM? Read here!
- Nov. 2: Here is an expository talk on
boundary element methods
that some of you might be interested in. (It is this Wednesday, Nov. 4,
at 4:00 p.m. in Blocker 503.)
- Oct. 25: Something long overdue: I really want to encourage
and help you to put your work on the Web, and to read what others have put
there, and also to discuss mathematics with specificity in e-mail and your
reviews and reports. I have compiled some links that may be useful.
(More useful would be for the state of the technology to advance so that
the process becomes easy and natural for all concerned. That is happening
slowly.)
- Information on the Web about
putting math on the Web. I urge all of you to read at least the first
item (the one from Swarthmore). The later items become increasingly
technical, and often refer to "solutions" that are not useful to us now
because not every reader has the necessary software. The whole page will
be of interest to those who might be interested in helping develop the
higher education of the future.
- Information about DVI viewers.
If you are unable to read the excellent homework papers of TeX users such
as David Robertson (M. 311, f96) and Andrew Barkley (M. 311, f98),
you should read this!
- On-line introductions to TeX.
If you want to learn to use TeX yourself, here is free documentation!
- Oct. 10: The next help session will be WEDNESDAY, Oct. 14.
After that, help sessions will be on Thursday (until Thanksgiving).
- Oct. 2: For the immediate future, one copy of your report is
likely to be returned to you by the e-mail system as undeliverable. Don't
panic -- I will get the second copy.
- Sept. 10: There will be no help session next week (when I am
out of the country). The next help session (after tonight) will be
WEDNESDAY, Sept. 23.
- Sept. 10: The mathematics department has openings for suitably
qualified student workers to work in the departmental help sessions for
freshman level courses. The pay rate has been increased to 7$ per hour.
Application forms are available in BLOC 623.
- Sept. 8: Special instructions for Week
3
- Sept. 8: The normal time for weekly help sessions will be
Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. There will be exceptional weeks, however; stay
tuned for announcements. The place will be Blocker 624.
- Sept. 8: Class notes (required), old tests, and old homework
solutions are now available at Notes-N-Quotes.
- Class notes for the first week or so: (removed 10/8 to save disk
space)
