  • May 10: Median score on the final exam is 80. I have to say that that's not as good as it sounds, since you had 130 points to work with. The performance on the perturbation theory, Fourier series, and Fourier transform problems was rather disappointing. The solutions are posted below. Grades will be available tomorrow morning at latest.

    The remark about homework grades in the May 8 message is wrong. The homework scores are multiplied by 1/2 to a basis of 100 points, as announced in the course handout.

  • May 8: The WebCT display has been updated. There were quite a few errors in the spreadsheet entry of the homework, and there still may be some. If you think your homework grades are not right, please bring both papers for the week in question to the final exam. I am sorry for any mistakes and will do my best to correct them.

    The homework total and average on WebCT do NOT include the extra credit problems for Week 13. Those will be added to the total, then the amount will be multiplied by 3/4 to scale it to 150 points as a perfect score. (Of course, some people have more than 150 because of numerous forms of extra credit.)

    The reviewing and class-participation scores will be added, then multiplied by 4/5, then I'll add 5 points.

  • May 4: If you were asked to do a homework revision and expect credit for it, you need to supply me with a copy or a URL before the final exam. I"m sorry I forgot to remind you of this during class.
  • May 1: No office hour this Wednesday. I expect to be in the office

  • Apr. 19: Latest Math Club announcement (for Monday, Apr. 24). The topic is PDEs this time!
  • Apr. 10: Office hour this Thursday (April 13) will be 2:30-3:30 (not 3-4).
  • Apr. 3: The Fourier series Maple demos are now available below.
  • Apr. 3: Homework 10 is due April 10, not April 5.
  • Mar. 29: I will be unable to meet my scheduled office hour at 3:00 on Thursday, April 6 (the day before the next test). Therefore, I will be in the office that morning, at least from 10:30 to 11:30.
  • Feb. 27: The key for Test A has been corrected. I changed the problem to match the solution, not vice versa, so that future generations will have a nice problem to study from. The solution to the problem as printed on your test is algebraically a monstrosity, but the principles are the same as in the nice problem. My apologies.
  • Feb. 14: This Thursday (Feb. 16) my office hour will be at 2:00, not 3:00.
  • Jan. 30: This Friday the class will meet in CE 137 (not BLOC 125) with a "guest lecturer". I will miss the afternoon office hour on Thursday (Feb. 2), but I expect to be in the office that morning from about 9:30 to 10:30.
  • Jan. 25: Revised groups and homework assignments for Week 2 are now posted.
