As promised, here is an advance announcement of the main essay 
question.  In preparation you may consult books, notes, etc., and 
write out a preliminary version of your answer.  You may NOT 
bring any such written material into the exam.  During the exam 
you'll write out your official answer.  Quality of exposition 
will definitely count heavily.
