Mathematics 467, Section 901, Fall 2014
Modern Geometry
Last updated Wed 17 Dec 2014
Announcements (reverse chronological order)
- 17 Dec: Grades have been submitted and posted.
I added 10 points to the test total to give everybody the
grade I think you deserve. Good job overall; it was a pleasure
to work with you.
- 15 Dec: Homework grades are on a basis of 80; your raw score
total will be multiplied by 0.678 = 80/118.
Class participation (and attendance) grades are on a basis of 40; your
raw score in eCampus will be multiplied by 0.667 = 40/60.
The final exam solution sheet is linked below.
- 10 Dec: Final office hours: I expect to be in the office
Thursday and Friday afternoons (11 and 12 Dec), roughly from 2 to 5.
Your term papers will be ready to be picked up.
- 6 Dec: Essay question for the final exam:
announcement and instructions
and the question itself.
(to be revealed on Monday, 8 Dec.)
- 2 Dec: Announcement of
Math
Club meeting (Movie Night) Tuesday, 9 Dec, 7 pm, BLOC 169.
- 16 Nov: Writing Center's
writing
and video contest
- 11 Nov: We will not have class on Wednesday, 19 Nov.
Please use the time to work on your term paper or to read the papers by
Janna Levin (Physics Reports 365 (2002) 271-333) or W. F.
Reynolds (American Mathematical Monthly 100 (1993) 442-455).
(Homework will be due Friday, 21 Nov.)
Also, I will miss the office hour on Tuesday, 18 Nov.
- 10 Oct: I will be unable to meet my office hour at 3:00
on Tuesday, Oct. 14. Instead, I will be in my office that day between
1:00 and 2:00.
- 3 Oct: Below (with the term paper instructions) I have added
the bibliographical style guide for the journals of the
Mathematical Association of America. I do not require you to use any
particular format for references, provided that your style is internally
consistent and provides the needed information. But this one is a good
default to follow. Note particularly the advice on how to handle items
on the Web. (These come at the bottom of both lists.)
- 1 Oct: I may be late to my office hour on Monday, Oct 6.
(I need to attend a graduate student's final oral exam the previous hour.)
- 8 Sep: First AMUSE
seminar of the semester will be Wed 10 Sep, 6-7 pm, BLOC 166.
More information about
AMUSE is here.
Course procedures and resources
Old class home pages
[Old homework and team
solutions will be turned on after your assignments are due.]
Lecture notes
[These were not originally intended for public consumption. Diagrams are
missing. Remarks in square brackets are usually stage directions to
myself.]
[These links start out pointing to previous semesters' notes.
They will be replaced as I make revisions.]
Weekly instructions
[These will become available at the links below as the course
develops. Analogues from previous semesters are visible on the old home
pages; they won't change much.]
Test solutions
(Of course, these do not exist until after the test.
Old tests, with solutions to most non-essay questions,
are visible on the old home pages.)
