Assignments for Week 6

1. (W) The book review is due October 9. Please submit it to me, not Valentina. I will acknowledge receipt.
2. (R) Read Katz Chapter 9 (Renaissance).
3. (R) Read my "lecture" for the week (when available) and the addendum on cubic equations.
4. (W) Homework for Monday, Oct. 9: Katz pp. 252-254, Exercises 14, 18, 21, 28, 30, 36
   Remarks:
   • In Exercise 21, Bombelli's a will not be an integer.
5. (W, optional) (due on or before Monday, Oct. 16) These exercises are relevant to Sec. 9.3.2, which chronologically belongs in Chapter 10 as much as Chapter 9, so let's spread them out. Please submit them to me, not Valentina. Since they are optional, it is perfectly all right to do only one of them.
   • Do the experiment on the logarithmic distribution of random data.
   • Answer the questions on island ecology and estimating compound interest.
