OK, gang, it's time to get serious. A week has gone by, and only two people have responded to my call to organize times for online meetings. Only one of you has posted a bio on Vista. Here are the action items I'm declaring for this week. 1) You should already be doing online homework on Cengage (also known by its old name, Ilrn). This week I'm declaring a written assignment, due 5:00 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, consisting just of the problem on the departmental suggested homework page headed "Also be able to do ...". (The homework page is now linked directly to our class home page, and also the "links" page in Vista.) There are two ways to turn in written homework: [1] Produce an electronic document (PostScript or PDF format) and e-mail it to the grader (see below). An easy way to do this (if no sketches are involved) is to type into Maple, then find "Print" on the Maple menu, and in the resulting popup box check "Print to file"; that produces a .ps file. [2] Turn in a paper document to my mailbox (Blocker 603) or wall pouch (outside Blocker 620H). You can use university interdepartmental mail (if you have access to it) or, if really necessary, U.S. mail. (After the grader has been assigned a mailbox, homework should go directly to her. Stay tuned.) 2) The two students who answered strongly preferred MWF times, so I'm going to log into the Recitation chat room this Wednesday at 2:00. Hope to see you there! We will discuss problems of your choosing, including that written homework problem. Using the whiteboard is a skill that will take us all some time to master. If this system just doesn't work at all well, we'll give it up and rely on web pages and office hours. But you are paying tuition for 4 credit hours, so I am trying to give you some more of my time, if you will take advantage of it. Some of you may prefer an evening session, since you're taking the online course because you're working. Let me know. It may not be possible to get everyone on line at the same time. The Recitation chat room is "logged" (I know whether you attended) and is to be used for formal online classes. The Chatter chat room is for your informal interaction; it is not logged and I probably will never log into it, except maybe to practice with the whiteboard. 3) If you haven't already done all the other things I've asked you to do, please get caught up. I update the main web page frequently. The lecture on vectors is now finished, and the part about unit vectors and projections at the end is genuinely different from the book's material. The lecture on functions and limits will slowly grow throughout this week. There are links from the web page to other things you need, such as Vista, Cengage, and departmental 151 material. There is a link page in Vista back to our web page, Cengage, etc. The grader's name is Hannah Saugier and her e-mail address is above. She will have a mailbox in Blocker or Milner or both (details probably at the end of this week). She is a grader, not a TA and definitely not a tutor. Her payroll hours are limited. In other words, if you need help with math, you should contact me, not her. My office hours this week: T 2, R 10, F 10:30 (for about an hour each time).
