Micro X-Win

Please be courteous and do not enter the classes of other instructors to access your email or Maple files.

During hours when classes are in session in Blocker 131, you may still access the calclab machines and the files in your account by using the Micro X-Win program.

From your TAMU Windows XP account, do START->PROGRAMS->COMMUNICATIONS->X-Win. Right click in the title bar at the top, select Sessions, calclab1, and login as you normally would. You are actually working through the PC on the linux servers in calclab. Files are saved in your calclab account. Printing output will be to the PC Lab that you direct it to, depending on what you put in the -d (destination) field of your xprint command.

Starnet's X-Windows software is also available for purchase for $20 at SELL. There is a three day return policy if the software doesn't work on your machine. Copies of this program available from SELL have recently been upgraded to work with the 172.16 ip addresses that result from cable modem connections, as well as the standard ip addresses from campus machines.

For individuals with linux machines or Macs with OS X, one can work directly using Maple on the calclab machines over a fast network connection. For linux, one opens a terminal window and issues the command "ssh -X -l (your login ID on calclab1) calclab1.math.tamu.edu. It will ask you for your password. Typing the command
> /usr/local/bin/xmaple11
will run Maple 11 in the worksheet mode, and the X display will be forwarded to your machine.

Mac users can do the same thing, provided that they have downloaded the x11 program from http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/x11/. The commands indicated above are issued in the x11 (not terminal) window.
