Maplets for Calculus wins 2008 ICTCM Award
March 6, 2008, San Antonio, TX: Drs. Philip Yasskin and Douglas Meade and their program "Maplets for Calculus" were presented the 11th annual ICTCM Award for "excellence and innovation in using technology to enhance the teaching and learning of mathematics" at the 20th International Conference on Technology in Collegiate Mathematics sponsored by Pearson publishers.
Maplets for Calculus is a collection of 94 Maple applets for calculus students and instructors. They provide an interactive graphical user interface for typical examples and exercises on a variety of topics in single-variable calculus. The Maplets for Calculus balance the development of both understanding and technical skills.
Dr. Yasskin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Texas A&M University. Dr. Yasskin has been using computer algebra systems since the mid 1970s and Maple since 1992. He is one of the pioneers of web-based Maple applications. He is the principal author on the single and multivariable Maple lab manuals for Stewart's Calculus texts. He supervises the Maple computer labs for the first year engineering calculus courses.
Dr. Meade is the Director of Undergraduate Studies and an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Meade has more than twenty years of experience using Maple for both research and education, and was a pioneer in creating (legal) Internet accessible Maple-based applications. Among his publications are a textbook for freshman engineering, several online courses, and numerous Maple supplements to top-selling calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations textbooks.
