Constructing a Calclab Web Page
NOTE: STUDENT CALCLAB ACCOUNTS ARE DESTROYED AT THE END OF EACH
SEMESTER. WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND USING AN OUTSIDE SYSTEM FOR A MORE
PERMANENT HOME PAGE.
To construct a Web page for the Calclabs you should follow the same general procedure as you would on other Linux/Unix servers. That procedure is as follows:
These instructions must be executed from a terminal window and can mostly be copy and pasted
-
Create a directory named public_html under your home
directory.
mkdir $HOME/public_html - Make this directory and your home directory searchable:
chmod a+x $HOME $HOME/public_html -or-
chmod 711 $HOME $HOME/public_html -
Create a new file in this directory named index.html.
This file is your home page, and will contain the HTML (HyperText Markup
Language) that will be displayed in the browser when people access
your Web Page. You'll also need to make this page and all other HTML pages
readable by everyone:
cd public_html
chmod a+r index.html page2.html page3.html
-or- chmod 644 index.html page2.html page3.html
Some Additional Help
- Linux basic commands to get an understanding of the above if it is unfamiliar.
- HTML Tutorial is provided by W3schools. This document is a good starting place to learning HTML.
- If your page does not work, make sure you have the file index.html in your public_html directory and all of the file permissions have been set properly as outlined above. If none of these efforts work send a message to the mail address listed at the end of this page. You can also advertise your page as having the URL of http://calclab.math.tamu.edu/~username/.
Please send comments, questions, or suggestions regarding this page
to your instructor. If they cannot answer your question,
webmaster@calclab.math.tamu.edu
