Mathematics 412, Sec. 501, Fall, 2005
- Announcements
- Dec.12: The grades on the final exam came out much higher
(median = 174) than those on the hour tests, an event unprecedented in my
near 30 years in Aggieland. Of course, 60 points of extra credit didn't
hurt, but clearly quite a few people woke up and smelled the coffee.
Also unusual were the very low homework scores; they are supposed
to be higher than test scores. So, in place of the usual generous curve
on the final exam, I added 45 points to everybody's total score, which I
think of as 5 more points on the hour test total and 40 points on the
"Homework and class participation" scores, which obviously needed to be
renormed. (In previous semesters such renorming often occurred before
numbers were posted.) This makes the final grade distribution almost the
same as on the final exam: 8 A, 5 B, 6 lower, 7 Q-drops.
Individual grades and scores will be posted on WebCT Vista later today.
- Dec. 8: The team solutions to the review problems are now
posted.
- Dec. 4: Tomorrow (the-Monday-that-is-a-Friday) my office hour
will start at 2:30 (not 10:45). I expect to be in my office at the usual
time of 2:00-3:00 on Wednesday and Thursday.
- Nov. 21: Happy Thanksgiving! I will be out of town for a long
holiday weekend, starting tomorrow afternoon, so I can't hold office
hours on Wednesday. Nov. 23, or Monday, Nov. 28.
- Nov. 12: Solutions for Test B are now available below!
- Nov. 9: Next Math
Club meeting (Monday, Nov. 14)
- Oct. 10: Office hour this Thursday, Oct. 13, is cancelled.
(I will be away from Thursday afternoon through Sunday.)
The Monday office hour (Oct. 17) is rescheduled for 2:00 instead of
10:45.
- Oct. 4: Math Career
Fair (Oct. 11)
- Sept. 23: I will be unable to meet the Monday morning office
hour, Sept. 26. I will be here in the afternoon (2-3 at least).
- Sept. 16: "Permanent" office hours: M 10:45-11:45, W
2:00-3:00, R 2:00-2:50
I will usually be in the office at the "analogous" times
(F 10:45, MF 2, T 2), but with no guarantee. (At W 10:45 I have a
standing
appointment with a graduate student.)

- Some old demos. (I am sorry that I have not had time to update or
maintain these properly. I'll try to find time for that later.)

(MathLily files are both
valid Mathematica files and valid TeX files.)
- Convergence of Fourier series (partial sums). Maple input and
output.

Rough correlation between the Harrell-Herod syllabus and ours:
- Block 1: HH Chapters 7, 6, 8, 3, 4, 5, 1, 9
- Block 2: [nonexistent chapter on Fourier
transforms], Chapters 20, 13 (beginning only), fragments of (15, 16, 19),
2, [nonexistent chapter on Sturm-Liouville
theory], 17 (fragments)
- Block 3: Chapters 10, 11, 18, g19[=22] (beginning)
- Test solutions
- Information on how to get a
minor
in mathematics, or even a double major. Most science and engineering
majors can qualify easily.
